Timotheus Noir is a fine art photographer and surrealist based in Kent, UK. He began taking photographs from an early age after finding interest in remote and historical locations whilst travelling around the world. It is not until his early works as an adult that he began to explore and convey his true passion as an artist. These early works aimed to navigate his journey of living with mental health issues but also to allow others to engage and contemplate experiences in relation to themselves. Featuring elaborately staged and conceptual themes conveyed in dream-like imagery that has roots in surrealism. His work expresses contemplations on the unconscious mind, mental health and the uncanny.

 

The photographs are a visual representation of the ways in which people are affected by repressed anxieties, dreams, thoughts, beliefs and perceptions. These elements within his ambiguous images allow for a sense of intrigue for the viewer and allow them to make their own interpretations of each scene. Their current work ‘The Uncanny’ aims to broaden our understanding of the inner mind and how it is projected into external and inner spaces concerning mental states. Each unique image is a stand-alone photograph that also acts within a series as a whole series of images together. His works use the medium of black-and-white digital photography, alongside techniques and manipulation to portray aspects of mental health. These pieces are then displayed on large-scale framed prints within an immersive installation that evoke feelings of uncanniness, anxiety, ambiguity and dread within the viewer.
